NUJ FCT Council Mourns Former NAWOJ Chairperson, Stella Okoh Esene

The journalism community in Abuja is mourning the loss of one of its pillars, Stella Okoh Esene, a respected media professional and former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, who passed away on Monday, 6th October 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, described her death as a monumental loss to the profession, noting that she was a passionate advocate for ethical journalism and gender equity in the newsroom.

In a condolence statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ FCT Council expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt sympathies to Stella’s family, colleagues, and members of NAWOJ.

“Stella was a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation. Her leadership, courage, and commitment to truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” the statement read.

Born 64 years ago in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, Stella retired from the Federal Ministry of Information before joining True Verdict Online Newspaper.

Her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson was marked by dedication, professionalism, and a relentless drive to uplift women journalists across the capital and beyond.

Her death, the NUJ said, comes at a time when her experience and wisdom are most needed in efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity in the Nigerian media landscape.

The Council prayed for the repose of her soul and for God to grant her family the fortitude to bear the loss, noting that burial arrangements would be announced in due course.
