ECOWAS Reaffirms Commitment To Women’s Leadership At UN Forum In New York
In a world where women remain underrepresented in governance despite their proven potential, West Africa is signalling a shift.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has renewed its pledge to champion women’s leadership and political participation across the region.
This reaffirmation came at the High-Level Africa Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Forum, held on 24 September 2025 in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly. Co-hosted by the African Union (AU), UNDP, and AWLN, the gathering drew senior UN officials led by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, development partners, as well as women and youth leaders.
Representing ECOWAS, Vice President Damtien Larbli Tchintchibidja delivered a goodwill message stressing that inclusive governance is not just a moral imperative but central to the regional body’s integration and development agenda.
The forum, themed “Advancing Women Political Participation in Africa”, called for deeper partnerships and collective action to ensure women are not left behind in shaping Africa’s political future.
