NUJ FCT Chair Urges Transparency In Deployment Of Tax Revenues
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on the Federal Government to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective deployment of tax revenues towards infrastructure and public welfare under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reforms.
Speaking at the inaugural Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja, Ike described the reforms as bold steps to modernise Nigeria’s fiscal system, broaden the tax base, and reduce dependence on oil revenues.
“Tax reform is pivotal to Nigeria’s economic growth, fiscal sustainability, and social development,” she said. “The true success of these reforms lies in how revenues are channelled to improve infrastructure and the quality of life of citizens.”
She stressed the need for clear communication of policies to help Nigerians understand their rights and obligations, while urging the media to play its role in providing accurate information, fostering dialogue, and building trust.
The lecture, themed “Navigating Tax Reforms in Nigeria: Insights on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Policies,” was delivered by former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the National Credit Guarantee Company Ltd., Yakubu Dogara.
Chairman of the Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, said taxation remains one of Nigeria’s most contentious issues and the new lecture series was created to simplify parliamentary activities and national debates.
Organising Committee Chair, Philip Nyiam, added that the initiative reflects the Press Corps’ determination to move beyond routine reporting by enlightening Nigerians and shaping national discourse.
