Nigeria, Japan Pledge Stronger Ties At TICAD 9
Nigeria and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation during high-level talks at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, met with his Japanese counterpart on the summit’s sidelines, where discussions focused on trade, investment, and regional security.
Ambassador Tuggar lauded Japan’s longstanding support for Africa through TICAD and JICA, urging Japanese businesses to invest in Nigeria’s priority sectors, including energy transition, agriculture, infrastructure, and the digital economy.
Both sides explored new areas of collaboration such as renewable energy, vocational training, and climate-smart agriculture.
They also reviewed cooperation on counterterrorism, maritime safety in the Gulf of Guinea, and global peacekeeping.
Tuggar extended an invitation to Japanese technology firms to join Nigeria’s Smart City and Digital Economy drive, and proposed the creation of a Nigeria–Japan Strategic Partnership Framework to shape future engagements.
The two ministers agreed to strengthen multilateral cooperation in line with TICAD 9’s themes of inclusive growth, climate resilience, and peacebuilding.
