EU Pledges N886 Million Humanitarian Aid To Support Displaced Families In Benue State
In a compassionate show of solidarity, the European Union has allocated €500,000 (approximately ₦886 million) in humanitarian assistance to help thousands of people displaced by renewed violence in Benue State.
The funding, will support emergency relief operations over a six-month period, focusing on shelter, protection, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and multi-purpose financial aid.
The initiative will be delivered in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
This intervention follows a surge in armed attacks across communities in Benue, which forced nearly 23,000 people to flee their homes in June 2025 alone.
Many of these individuals had already been displaced in the past, caught in a tragic cycle of violence and vulnerability.
Conditions in displacement camps remain dire, with families struggling to find shelter, clean water, and access to sanitation.
Livelihoods have been shattered, and protection risks particularly for women, children, and people with disabilities are escalating.
According to EU officials, the funding aims to address these urgent needs and offer a lifeline to those at risk.
“This is about preserving dignity and saving lives. The EU is standing with the people of Benue in this time of crisis,” the statement said.
Benue has been the epicentre of a protracted humanitarian emergency since 2018, with over 1.5 million people displaced over the years.
The violence of 2024 and 2025 alone has claimed nearly 6,900 lives and displaced more than 400,000 individuals.
The EU remains the world’s leading donor of humanitarian aid, offering critical support to vulnerable populations affected by conflict, disaster, and displacement guided solely by humanitarian needs.
