Japa: FG Partners Achievers University, FMC Owo To Tackle Health Worker Shortage

In a strategic move to address Nigeria’s critical shortage of healthcare professionals, the Federal Government has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Achievers University, Owo, and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo, Ondo State.

The agreement, signed at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare headquarters in Abuja, will allow Achievers University to use FMC Owo’s facilities for the clinical training of its medical, nursing, and allied health students.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, described the partnership as “timely and strategic,” highlighting it as a key part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed health agenda, which emphasises collaboration between public and private sectors.

Dr Salako noted that with many Nigerian-trained health workers migrating abroad, expanding local training capacity is vital.

He added that the government is working on models where destination countries of migrating health workers can meaningfully support Nigeria’s health system.

The founder and Pro-Chancellor of Achievers University, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, hailed the transparent process that led to the MoU, stressing that the agreement represents a firm commitment to raising standards in medical education.

“Today’s agreement is not just a document; it’s a promise to train the next generation of health professionals with integrity and excellence,” Ayorinde stated.

Medical Director of FMC Owo, Dr Hamed Liasu, affirmed the centre’s readiness, saying it already trains resident doctors across eleven departments and is accredited by top medical colleges in Nigeria and West Africa.

He revealed that plans are underway to upgrade the centre into a full teaching hospital to support expanded training in medicine, pharmacy, and physiotherapy.

The MoU signing was witnessed by senior officials from the Ministry, Achievers University, and FMC Owo, signalling a unified front in tackling Nigeria’s health workforce challenges.
