In a significant stride towards regional peace and resilience, the ECOWAS Commission has reinforced its partnership with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) to advance science-driven solutions across West Africa.

At a high-level meeting held at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, received the CTBTO Executive Secretary, Dr Robert Floyd, where both leaders committed to deepening cooperation in seismic monitoring, disaster risk reduction, and peacebuilding.

The talks celebrated West Africa’s full ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the region’s active role in the global monitoring system through six certified stations.

Discussions focused on strengthening early warning systems and building local capacity using seismic data.

Dr Touray underscored the importance of applying science and innovation to safeguard the environment and promote peace. “Strategic partnerships like this are vital in achieving our Vision 2050 — one that prioritises the safety, security, and well-being of all West Africans,” he said.

The renewed collaboration promises to place West Africa at the forefront of scientific resilience and global peace efforts.
