In a bold step to future-proof journalism in Nigeria, the U.S. Mission, in partnership with Channels Academy, hosted a high-impact speaker programme on Journalism Innovation and Sustainable Media Business from 4–10 May, gathering nearly 100 media CEOs in Abuja and Lagos.

The weeklong initiative, led by a seasoned U.S. media executive Stacia Philips, empowered Nigerian media leaders with tools to rethink business models, embrace innovation, and build resilient newsrooms in a rapidly evolving landscape.

At the Abuja launch, U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. underlined the vital link between media viability and democracy. “A free and independent press is the backbone of any strong democracy,” he said. “To remain independent, the media must also be economically sustainable.”

Philips, drawing on three decades of newsroom leadership, encouraged participants to embrace technology, diversify income streams, and nurture talent. “There’s no single formula,” she said, “but collaboration and adaptability are key.”

Through interactive sessions and peer learning, the programme fostered new partnerships, with participants exploring shared coverage models and joint content distribution as strategies for survival and growth.

Channels Academy General Manager Kingsley Uranta lauded the initiative’s impact. “The future of media lies in innovation and co-creation. We’re proud to lead the charge,” he noted.

As the U.S. Mission continues to champion press freedom through various exchange programmes, this collaboration signals a promising chapter for Nigeria’s vibrant media industry, defined by transparency, accountability, and progress.
