Sport and camaraderie took centre stage at the Nigeria Police Academy as officers and partner institutions gathered for a landmark badminton tournament celebrating the retirement of the Academy’s 24th Commandant, AIG Patrick A. Atayero.
The Nigeria Police Force Headquarters emerged champions of the maiden inter-institutional badminton tournament held at the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC), Wudil, Kano State, defeating teams from Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) and the host academy.
Led by AIG Akoh Benedict Gabriel, the Force Headquarters team claimed the gold medal and cash prize, while ADUSTECH secured silver and the Police Academy settled for bronze.
One of the highlights of the event was a veterans’ exhibition match featuring the retiring Commandant, AIG Atayero, who thrilled spectators with his performance on the court.
Speaking at the event, AIG Atayero thanked the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his leadership and expressed appreciation to the organisers, academy management and participants for making the maiden tournament a success.
The event, attended by Mrs Sarah Atayero, Chairperson of the POLAC POWA Chapter, family members and senior officials, concluded with a dinner at the Academy Officers’ Mess, as participants described the tournament as a milestone that would strengthen unity and friendship among the institutions.
