Anambra Strengthens Forest Protection With New Security Partnership
Protecting forests has become increasingly important as states seek stronger responses to illegal logging, environmental crimes and the growing effects of climate change.
In a move aimed at safeguarding its natural resources, the Anambra State Ministry of Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS) to enhance forest protection across the state.
The agreement, signed in Awka, establishes collaboration on joint patrols, intelligence gathering, enforcement of forestry laws, prevention of illegal logging and encroachment, wildfire prevention, community engagement and capacity building.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, described the partnership as a major step towards realising Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of a cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable Anambra.
He stressed that protecting forest resources is vital for biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development.
Commandant of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, Mazi Destiny E. Jonas, pledged the agency’s full support in securing forest reserves, strengthening surveillance and improving intelligence sharing to curb environmental offences.
The partnership is expected to reinforce inter-agency cooperation and promote the long-term preservation of Anambra State’s forests.
