DHQ, Defence Correspondents Join Forces To Tackle Misinformation
A trusted flow of information is increasingly becoming as vital to national security as success on the battlefield, with the military and the media seeking closer collaboration to counter misinformation and hostile propaganda.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with journalists to combat misinformation, disinformation and hostile propaganda while safeguarding national security.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executive of the Defence Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in Abuja, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, said the military would maintain an open-door policy with the media, stressing that accurate information and responsible reporting are essential to building public trust.
While noting that some operational details cannot be disclosed immediately for security reasons, Onoja urged journalists to seek clarification whenever necessary and to promote reportage that strengthens national cohesion.
DECAN President, Sunday Odita, described the relationship between the military and defence correspondents as a strategic partnership, commending the Armed Forces for granting journalists access to operational theatres.
He also called for more regular briefings and appealed for the establishment of a dedicated Defence Correspondents’ Press Centre to enhance defence reporting.
