Emporium At 10: NUJ FCT Urges Media To Choose Credibility Over Clicks
As digital platforms continue to reshape journalism, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has warned that credibility must remain the cornerstone of the profession if Nigeria’s democracy is to thrive.
Speaking at the 2026 Emporium Leadership Lecture and Awards held to mark the 10th anniversary of Emporium Reporters and Emporium Magazine, Ike praised the organisation for maintaining credible journalism despite the challenges facing Nigeria’s media industry.
Addressing the theme, “From Clicks to Credibility: Digital Media’s Role in Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy,” she cautioned against sacrificing accuracy for speed in the digital age, emphasising that public trust depends on responsible journalism.
“Credibility is not negotiable. It is the foundation upon which public trust is built and democracy is sustained,” she said, adding that a nation without a credible press is “navigating in the dark.”
The NUJ FCT Chairman reaffirmed the union’s commitment to uphold ethical journalism, defend press freedom, promote journalists’ welfare, and ensure accountability within the profession.
She also called on governments, corporate organisations, and civil society groups to support credible media organisations through partnerships, advertising, and investment in investigative journalism.
Congratulating Emporium Reporters on its decade-long journey, Ike described the milestone as a testament to resilience, vision, and unwavering dedication to truth.
She also challenged award recipients and young journalists to uphold integrity, noting that credibility is earned “brick by brick, story by story.”
