The transition from election victory to legislative service began on Tuesday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented Certificates of Return to four Senators-elect and one House of Representatives member-elect who emerged victorious in the June 20 bye-elections.

At a ceremony held at INEC headquarters in Abuja, the Commission charged the lawmakers-elect to justify the trust placed in them by delivering accountable and people-centred representation.

Representing INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, National Commissioner Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu described the elections as peaceful, credible and transparent, noting that the issuance of Certificates of Return marked the end of the electoral process and the beginning of public service responsibilities.

Among those honoured were APC’s Ikeje Asogwa Israel (Enugu North), Danladi Halilu Envulu-Anza (Nasarawa North), PDP’s Olaka Nwogu Johnson (Rivers South-East), and APC’s Rabiu Shuaibu, winner of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat in Kano State.

Noticeably absent was Ondo South Senator-elect, Prof. Francis Dayo Faduyile of the APC, who won the election but did not attend the ceremony. INEC gave no reason for his absence.

Agbamuche-Mbu also disclosed that Certificates of Return would be issued to winners of the Zuru State Constituency election in Kebbi State and the Ekiti State governorship election, both conducted on June 20.

She commended political parties, candidates, security agencies, election officials and voters for contributing to the successful conduct of the elections.
