NCDMB Shares Local Content Success Story With Ghana’s National Oil Company

As African nations seek to maximise the benefits of their oil and gas resources, Nigeria is increasingly emerging as a model for local content development across the continent.

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has hosted a delegation from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, for a knowledge-sharing and local content benchmarking study aimed at strengthening Ghana’s local content framework.

Receiving the delegation, NCDMB Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, said African oil-producing countries must prioritise local content development and reduce dependence on foreign technology in exploration, field development and production activities.

Represented by the Director of Corporate Services, Dr. Abdulmalik Halilu, Ogbe noted that Africa holds more than 120 billion barrels of crude oil reserves and about 800 trillion standard cubic feet of gas, making it imperative for countries to build indigenous capacity and harness their youthful workforce for economic transformation.

He highlighted the Board’s Nigerian Content 10-Year Strategic Roadmap, which focuses on technical capability development, compliance, business environment improvement, organisational growth and market expansion.

He also cited the Nigerian Content Intervention Fund, which provides single-digit loans to indigenous service companies, helping them acquire critical assets and compete effectively in the industry.

NCDMB further revealed that implementation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act has increased in-country value addition in the sector to 61 per cent.

Leader of the Ghanaian delegation and GNPC Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Eric Pwadura, commended the Board for its achievements, noting that Ghana currently operates only a local content unit and hopes to gain deeper insight into Nigeria’s more robust institutional framework.

The visit underscores growing collaboration among African oil-producing nations seeking to strengthen local participation, retain value within their economies and drive sustainable growth in the energy sector.
