Nigeria-Calms Border Tension After Cameroonian Troops Enter Cross River Community
A potentially sensitive border incident between Nigeria and Cameroon has been swiftly contained after Cameroonian military personnel reportedly crossed into Nigerian territory in Cross River State, prompting immediate intervention by the Nigerian Army.
The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army said the unauthorised entry occurred on 9 June in Danare Community, Boki Local Government Area, where troops at the Forward Operating Base responded promptly upon receiving reports of the foreign military presence.
According to the Army, contact was immediately established with the appropriate Cameroonian military authorities, leading to the withdrawal of the troops from Nigerian territory in line with existing border protocols.
Preliminary findings indicate that the incident stemmed from a dispute over the collection of levies on farmland located between Danare Community in Nigeria and Dadi Community in Cameroon.
To prevent a recurrence, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division has directed the Commander of 13 Brigade to engage with his Cameroonian counterpart to strengthen border coordination, clarify operational procedures and enhance cooperation along the boundary.
The Army reassured residents that the situation remains calm and fully under control, adding that troops are maintaining vigilance and monitoring activities along the border.
Authorities also urged members of the public to remain peaceful and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary tension.
