Police Arrest 199 Suspects, Rescue 88 Kidnap Victims As IGP Unveils New Security Measures
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced the arrest of 199 criminal suspects and the rescue of 88 kidnapped victims nationwide, underscoring the Nigeria Police Force’s renewed commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention.
Speaking at the monthly conference with strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, the IGP disclosed that since the last conference in May 2026, the Force had arrested eight suspected terrorists, 29 murder suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 55 kidnapping suspects and 42 suspected cultists.
He also revealed that 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles were recovered during various operations.
The police chief said security agencies were making progress in efforts to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State, assuring families that the operation remained active until all victims were safely rescued.
He also commended officers for successfully rescuing Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her twin sons from kidnappers in the state.
In a bid to strengthen security coordination, the IGP approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police to their respective geopolitical zones from 15 June.
He said the move would improve supervision, accountability and operational effectiveness across the country.
Disu further directed Commissioners of Police to establish “Handshake Patrols” with neighbouring states to close jurisdictional gaps often exploited by criminals.
He stressed the need for enhanced intelligence sharing and joint security operations among commands.
The IGP also ordered an immediate crackdown on vehicles operating without registration number plates or with concealed plates, warning that such vehicles would be impounded and subjected to legal action.
According to him, unregistered vehicles pose significant security risks and are frequently used by criminal elements to evade detection.
He urged senior officers to deepen community policing efforts, strengthen engagement with the media and maintain professionalism in the discharge of their duties to build public trust and improve security outcomes nationwide.
