NUJ FCT Congress Calls For Stronger Security Measures, Safer Schools and Improved Media Engagement
Journalists have been urged to remain steadfast in holding public institutions accountable while prioritising their personal safety amid growing security concerns across Nigeria.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called on security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country, stressing that the protection of lives and property must remain a top priority at all levels of government.
The call formed part of resolutions reached at the conclusion of the Council’s Congress held on Saturday, 6 June 2026, attended by over 500 members.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the Congress urged journalists to continue reporting security issues accurately, objectively and responsibly while upholding the ethics of the profession.
Members were also advised to remain vigilant and adopt necessary safety measures to protect themselves and their families.
The Congress emphasised the need for transparency and accuracy in official security communications, urging security agencies to provide information that reflects realities on the ground, particularly on cases involving kidnappings, abductions and other security breaches.
On education, the Congress called for the full implementation of the Safe School Initiative and urged governments at all levels to strengthen security around schools through perimeter fencing, deployment of security personnel and other protective measures to safeguard pupils, students and teachers.
The Congress also expressed concern over persistent water supply challenges in the Federal Capital Territory, calling on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to urgently address the situation.
Additionally, members appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to strengthen engagement with journalists to enhance public understanding of government policies and improve information dissemination.
The Congress further urged the National Secretariat of the NUJ to organise regular seminars, workshops and conferences on national security reporting to equip journalists with the skills required to report sensitive security matters professionally and safely.
The communiqué was signed by Comrade Monica Danbauchi, Comrade Raphael Towoju and Comrade Ediri Oyibo.
