FG Approves Five Air Peace Flights To Evacuate Nigerians from South Africa

A potential lifeline is underway for hundreds of Nigerians stranded in South Africa, as the Federal Government moves closer to launching a major evacuation operation following recent unrest and concerns affecting some citizens.

The Federal Government has approved five evacuation flights to bring home Nigerians in South Africa, with the first aircraft expected to depart Johannesburg on Monday evening carrying about 270 passengers.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, disclosed that the screening and verification exercise for Nigerians who indicated interest in returning home has been extended until Wednesday, 10 June 2026.

According to him, more than 500 Nigerians have already been screened and cleared for evacuation by officials at Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria.

Ebienfa said President Bola Tinubu approved the operation, which will be conducted by Air Peace, adding that the inaugural flight will proceed once the necessary permits and clearances are secured.

He noted that details regarding the departure time from Johannesburg and the estimated arrival time in Lagos would be communicated after further updates from the Nigerian Mission in South Africa.

The evacuation exercise is expected to provide relief for affected Nigerians seeking a safe return home.
