Nigeria Enhances Ebola Preparedness As WHO Coordinates Multi-Agency Readiness Effort
As emerging infectious diseases continue to threaten global health security, Nigeria is intensifying efforts to prevent and rapidly respond to potential Ebola outbreaks through stronger collaboration among key government agencies and international partners.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Nigeria has joined forces with the House of Representatives Committee on Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service to enhance the country’s Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) preparedness and response capacity.
The coordinated effort aims to improve early detection, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms to contain any potential outbreak before it spreads.
WHO Nigeria stated that the initiative, supported by its technical expertise, is helping to strengthen systems designed to protect millions of Nigerians from emerging infectious diseases and other public health threats.
The organisation also commended the commitment of government institutions and donor partners supporting Nigeria’s health security agenda, noting that sustained collaboration remains critical to safeguarding communities.
The renewed focus on preparedness comes amid growing concerns about the cross-border movement of infectious diseases, making effective coordination among health, immigration and border management agencies more important than ever.
Health experts say proactive preparedness remains one of the most effective strategies for preventing outbreaks from escalating into national emergencies.
