NUJ FCT Honours Philip Nyam For Excellence In Legislative Reporting
In a media landscape where public trust depends heavily on accurate and insightful reporting, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has honoured veteran journalist and media strategist, Mr. Philip Nyam, for his outstanding contribution to legislative journalism.
Nyam, Director General of the “One Voice, New Era” Campaign Organisation that championed the emergence of Comrade Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, received the Award of Excellence in Legislative Reporting during the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week Lecture at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.
A National Assembly Correspondent with New Telegraph Newspapers, Nyam was recognised for his in-depth, balanced and exclusive coverage of parliamentary activities, as well as his ability to simplify complex legislative issues for ordinary Nigerians.
The NUJ FCT Council described the award as a recognition of his professionalism, accuracy and commitment to strengthening democratic accountability through journalism.
Speaking at the event, NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, praised Nyam’s exceptional understanding of legislative processes and his influence within the media profession.
“He doesn’t just report what happens in the chamber. He explains why it matters, who it affects, and what comes next,” she said.
Popularly known as “Prof,” Nyam is a former Chairman of both the House of Representatives Press Corps and the FCT Correspondents’ Chapel. Beyond reporting, he is widely respected as an editor, mentor and media manager who has shaped the careers of many journalists.
Receiving the award, Nyam dedicated the honour to members of the “One Voice, New Era” Campaign Organisation and journalists committed to accountability reporting.
“Legislative reporting is about understanding, not just access. If we get it right, democracy works better,” he stated.
He also commended Comrade Grace Ike for what he described as her transformative leadership and commitment to journalists’ welfare within the NUJ FCT Council.
