Nigeria Tightens Ebola Surveillance As FG Moves To Prevent Possible Outbreak
With fresh Ebola outbreaks reported in parts of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Federal Government says Nigeria has stepped up nationwide surveillance and emergency preparedness measures to prevent any possible spread of the deadly virus into the country.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, assured Nigerians on Tuesday that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation.
According to the Minister, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, working through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Port Health Services and other agencies, has activated enhanced monitoring and response systems in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
He said measures already in place include tighter screening at entry points, strengthened laboratory capacity, improved surveillance across states, reinforced infection prevention protocols in health facilities, and intensified public awareness campaigns.
Prof. Pate also advised Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene practices and report any unusual illness to the nearest health facility, while healthcare workers were urged to remain vigilant and strictly follow infection prevention guidelines.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and promised to provide timely updates as the situation develops.
