Police Shake-Up: IGP Disu Moves Against Brutality, Unveils New Crime Unit

Amid rising scrutiny over police conduct and mounting security threats, the Nigeria Police Force has announced sweeping reforms aimed at restoring public trust and strengthening operational efficiency.

At an emergency strategy meeting in Abuja, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu convened top commanders to confront critical security challenges and reinforce accountability across the Force.

Disu, in very strong terms, condemned the recent extra-judicial killing of a suspect in Delta State, confirming the dismissal of the officers involved and their referral for prosecution.

He stressed that misconduct will not be tolerated, declaring that no officer is above the law.

Highlighting recent gains, the police chief revealed that operations in April led to the arrest of dozens of terror, murder, robbery and kidnapping suspects, alongside the rescue of 189 victims and recovery of arms and stolen vehicles.

As part of the reforms, Disu announced the creation of a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), designed to tackle serious crimes through intelligence-led operations, strict oversight, and human rights compliance.

He also directed police commissioners nationwide to deepen community engagement and improve direct communication with citizens.

The IGP reaffirmed that ongoing reforms will prioritise professionalism, discipline and accountability, signalling a renewed push to reposition the Force.
