As conflict, climate shocks and displacement tighten their grip on vulnerable communities, the European Union has stepped in with fresh humanitarian support aimed at saving lives across West and Central Africa.

The European Commission has announced €235 million in aid to assist millions affected by violence, food insecurity and instability in the region.

The funding will target forcibly displaced persons, host communities and populations in hard-to-reach areas.

Nigeria is set to receive €33 million, while Chad will get over €72 million.

The Central Sahel region will benefit from €75 million, alongside €22 million for the Central African Republic, €16.6 million for Cameroon, €4.8 million for Mauritania, and over €6 million for coastal countries.

An additional €6.4 million has been earmarked for regional projects.

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, described the region as facing a “storm of humanitarian crises” driven by conflict, poverty, hunger and climate shocks.

She stressed that humanitarian aid remains a lifeline, providing food, clean water, healthcare, shelter and education for millions.

The crises are most severe in the Central Sahel and Lake Chad regions, where protracted conflict continues to trigger mass displacement and spill into neighbouring coastal countries.

The situation is further compounded by the Sudan crisis, which is placing additional strain on Eastern Chad, as well as persistent unrest in North-West Nigeria, parts of Cameroon and the Central African Republic.

The EU says the intervention underscores its commitment to supporting crisis-affected populations and strengthening resilience in one of the world’s most fragile regions.
