As insecurity grows more complex, Nigeria’s policing strategy is increasingly leaning on policy intelligence and elite research institutions for smarter solutions.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has signalled a shift towards intelligence-driven security governance, as he hosted the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Ayo Omotayo, in Abuja.

The high-level engagement, held at the Force Headquarters on Thursday, explored avenues for deeper collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the nation’s foremost policy think tank, an alliance seen as critical in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Omotayo, who led a delegation that included retired DIG ‘Leye Oyebade and policy expert Dr Garba Malumfashi, described NIPSS as the apex platform for strategic reflection and governance dialogue, directly under the Presidency.

He emphasised the Institute’s role in shaping national policy through research and engagement with top-level decision-makers.

In response, IGP Disu underscored the growing importance of partnerships between security agencies and policy institutions, noting that modern policing must be guided by data, research, and strategic foresight.

He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, capacity development, and reforms aimed at improving professionalism and service delivery.

The meeting ended with both institutions expressing readiness to collaborate on research, leadership development, and policy formulation, moves expected to bolster internal security and strengthen governance frameworks across Nigeria.
