Data Protection Push Gains Momentum As FCC, NDPC Forge Strategic Alliance
In an era where data has become one of the most valuable assets in governance, Nigeria is taking deliberate steps to protect citizens’ information and strengthen institutional accountability.
The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to data protection, transparency and digital governance through a strengthened partnership with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
This development followed a courtesy visit by the NDPC’s National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, who led a delegation to the FCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, where they were received by the Executive Chairman, Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.
Welcoming the delegation, Omidiran commended the NDPC’s sustained efforts in promoting data privacy awareness nationwide, stressing that safeguarding sensitive national data is critical to building trust and ensuring fairness in governance.
She noted that the FCC’s ongoing digital transformation—including plans to launch an official website, requires strict compliance with global data protection standards to guarantee secure and efficient service delivery.
In his remarks, Dr. Olatunji described the FCC as a strategic institution within Nigeria’s governance framework, emphasising that adherence to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 would enhance transparency, accountability and public confidence.
He also highlighted the role of inter-agency collaboration in advancing effective governance, adding that the NDPC would support the FCC through capacity-building initiatives, including staff training, certification as Data Protection Officers and access to its Virtual Privacy Academy.
Both agencies agreed to deepen cooperation through knowledge-sharing platforms and compliance frameworks aimed at improving institutional efficiency and safeguarding citizens’ data.
