Abuja Journalists Raise Alarm Over Water Crisis, Fuel Hike, Insecurity

When the cost of living keeps rising and basic services keep failing, the pressure is felt first by ordinary people.

That concern took centre stage on Saturday as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, used its congress in Abuja to spotlight a growing list of issues troubling residents of the Federal Capital Territory and Nigerians at large.

At the meeting held on 14 March 2026, the union decried the rising price of fuel, prolonged water scarcity in parts of the FCT, epileptic power supply, delay in the full implementation of the new minimum wage, and the return of refuse heaps across the capital.

Congress also expressed concern over worsening environmental challenges, especially deforestation and the indiscriminate felling of Melina trees, warning that such practices were contributing to rising heatwaves in the territory.

On security and social welfare, the union raised the alarm over the increasing number of mentally ill persons roaming Abuja streets and the growing threat of “one chance” robbery syndicates, calling for urgent intervention from the FCT Administration, security agencies and relevant government departments.

The journalists’ body said authorities must act quickly to protect public health, improve living conditions and restore confidence in governance.
