IPOB Ends Monday Sit-at-Home in South-East, Orders Return To Normal Life From February 9

For years, Mondays in the South-East carried the weight of fear and silence. That chapter, IPOB says, is now closed.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the complete and permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East, with effect from 9 February 2026.

The directive was issued by IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, according to a statement on Sunday by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

The sit-at-home order, introduced in August 2021 to protest Kanu’s arrest, rendition to Nigeria and continued detention, had led to widespread closure of markets, schools, banks and offices every Monday.

IPOB said the cancellation is aimed at allowing residents to resume normal economic and social activities without fear or intimidation.

Powerful stressed that markets, schools, offices and transport services must now operate fully on Mondays, adding that “the era of Monday sit-at-home is over”.

He warned that any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home going forward would be acting against Kanu’s explicit instruction and would be treated as enemies of the people and the Biafran cause.

IPOB also urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while cautioning that no state governor has the authority to threaten or shut down businesses of traders who voluntarily choose to stay at home in solidarity.

The group added that any market renovation or relocation must be done with the consent of stakeholders and with adequate alternative trading locations provided.

Calling for unity across the South-East, IPOB appealed to residents to open their shops, go to work and send their children to school without fear, insisting that normal life should resume across the region.
