First Of Its Kind: Ogwuaga Abba Makes History With Grand Ofala Festival
When culture, leadership and identity align, history is made, and Ogwuaga Abba is poised for such a defining moment.
The Ogwuaga Abba community in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State will, on Tuesday, 30 December 2025, host its first-ever Ofala Festival, marking a significant cultural milestone not only for the community but for the entire state.
The historic celebration, known as the 2025 Ogwuaga Abba Ofala Festival, heralds the ceremonial emergence of the traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, Eze Duru Oshimiri Obinna Akwiwu (Dim Ohamadike II of Ogwuaga Abba), from spiritual seclusion to renew his authority, bless his people and reaffirm his sacred bond with the land and ancestors.
Traditionally associated with Igbo monarchies in parts of Anambra State, the Ofala Festival is renowned for its colourful pageantry, royal regalia, cultural dances and music, serving as a powerful symbol of unity, heritage preservation and communal pride.
Its introduction in Ogwuaga Abba represents a cultural rebirth and a bold statement of identity.
Since receiving his staff of office from Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in March 2025, Eze Akwiwu has championed cultural revival, peace and people-focused development.
His reign has already witnessed the successful revival of traditional festivals, including a widely attended New Yam Festival in September, signalling a renewed commitment to heritage and communal cohesion.
The maiden Ofala Festival is expected to attract dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora, including traditional rulers, political leaders, captains of industry, academics and business executives.
The event will be chaired by renowned legal practitioner and community leader, Nze Dr Barr. Adolph Okoroha (Akaraka of Ogwuaga Abba).
As anticipation builds, Ogwuaga Abba is already alive with festive energy, reflecting a community united behind its monarch and eager to inscribe its name boldly in the annals of Igbo cultural history.
