FRSC Corps Marshal Urges Nigerians To Take Responsibility As Ember Months Campaign Flags Off In Rivers State

As the festive season approaches with its familiar surge in road traffic, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has renewed its call for vigilance and responsibility among motorists to stem the rising tide of road crashes across the country.

Speaking at the 2025 Ember Month Town Hall Meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, underscored the urgency of tackling distracted driving, a behaviour he described as one of the “most prevalent risks on Nigeria’s highways.”

With the theme “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” Mohammed warned that actions such as mobile phone use while driving, arguing with passengers, eating behind the wheel, emotional distress, drug or alcohol use, and fatigue continue to claim avoidable lives.

He revealed that between January and September 2025, Nigeria recorded 7,715 road crashes, a 10.04 per cent increase from 2024, with 3,915 deaths and 24,674 injuries.

However, he noted a glimmer of hope in Rivers State, where fatalities dropped by 35.7 per cent and injuries by 37.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

Highlighting the Corps’ proactive measures, Mohammed said the FRSC has intensified enforcement, sensitisation, and digital interventions, including the deployment of its mobile app that allows passengers to report reckless driving in real time.

He urged Nigerians to embrace the tool for safer travel.

The Corps Marshal commended the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for prioritising road infrastructure projects that have improved access and safety across the state.

He also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure initiatives and the support of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, for strengthening road safety administration nationwide.

Mohammed concluded by calling on all road users to make personal commitments to safe driving.

“Every road user must take responsibility. Every journey must be safe. Every life must be valued,” he said.
