In a landmark achievement for the country’s communication and information sector, Nigeria has been approved to host UNESCO’s first Category 2 International Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute.

The decision was reached during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference (Communication and Information Commission Session) held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The Nigerian delegation, led by top media and information chiefs, included Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON); Dr Mohammed Bulama, Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN); Senator Engr. Kenneth Eze, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation; Dr Hajo Sani, Nigeria’s Ambassador to UNESCO; Honourable Olusola Fatoba, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Ethics and Values; Malam Abdulhamid Salihu Dembos, Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA); and Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON).

The approval marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to promoting media literacy, ethical communication, and responsible information dissemination in the digital age.

The institute, once established, will serve as a global hub for research, training, and policy development on media and information literacy, helping nations build resilience against misinformation and digital manipulation.

Nigeria’s successful bid underscores its growing influence in the global media landscape and reaffirms the country’s leadership in advancing freedom of expression, access to information, and digital inclusion across Africa.
