EU Reacts To Trump’s Remarks On Nigeria, Reaffirms Support For Peace And Religious Freedom
The European Union has reaffirmed its solidarity with Nigeria amid renewed global attention following recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump concerning the country’s security and religious tensions.
Responding to media inquiries in Brussels, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security, Anouar El Anouni, said the Union had taken note of the statements made by the American administration but remains focused on supporting Nigeria’s peace and stability efforts.
“The EU expresses its solidarity with all the communities and families affected by the violence, including the recent large-scale attacks in the southern belt of Nigeria and in the northeast,” El Anouni stated.
He emphasised that while religion has been cited in some conflicts, it is only one of several factors fuelling violence in Nigeria.
The EU, he added, continues to cooperate with relevant Nigerian authorities through multifaceted support aimed at preventing violence, consolidating peace, and assisting victims of conflict and displacement.
The spokesperson reiterated the Union’s commitment to freedom of religion and belief, protection of minorities, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse communities, beyond ethnic, political, or religious divides.
