Bishop Resigns After Vatican Probe Uncovers Alleged Affairs With 17 Women
The latest scandal shaking the Catholic Church underscores a recurring struggle between the vow of celibacy and human frailty, a tension that continues to test the institution’s credibility in the modern world.
A Senior Catholic Cleric, Bishop Ciro Quispe López, has resigned after a Vatican investigation uncovered allegations that he was romantically involved with at least 17 women, including a nun and a lawyer.
The 51-year-old Peruvian bishop, once regarded as a devout and influential leader, fell from grace following a series of explosive revelations that exposed a web of secret relationships.
According to The Times, the scandal began when a nun, reportedly among his lovers, grew jealous of another woman, a lawyer, and leaked details of the bishop’s affairs.
The disclosures snowballed after Bishop López accidentally sent intimate photos and videos, meant for his partners, to his cleaning lady, who then alerted Church authorities.
The Vatican’s inquiry reportedly uncovered extensive evidence, including explicit photographs, videos, and recordings linking the bishop to multiple women.
While Bishop López has denied the allegations, claiming they are part of a “smear campaign orchestrated by dark hands,” the Church is also probing possible financial irregularities tied to his activities.
The case has reignited debate over the Catholic Church’s centuries-old rule of priestly celibacy, with many questioning whether the policy remains sustainable.
Coming just months after another bishop was suspended for secretly marrying in the United States, López’s resignation marks one of the most sensational scandals to hit the Church in recent years.
