In a renewed crackdown on illegal arms proliferation, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) have dismantled multiple gunrunning networks across Nigeria, arresting nine suspects and recovering a cache of deadly weapons.

The recovered weapons include, AK-47 and AK-49 rifles, fabricated firearms, and over 50 rounds of live ammunition.

Addressing journalists at the FID-IRT headquarters in Guzape, Abuja, on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the arrests were the result of “coordinated intelligence-led operations” spanning several states, including Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Kaduna.

Hundeyin highlighted five major cases, noting that among those arrested were notorious arms dealers and kidnappers responsible for supplying weapons to criminal gangs across the North Central region.

“These operations underscore the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring public safety,” he stated.

Recovered exhibits included two AK-47 rifles, two AK-49 rifles, one locally fabricated AK-47 rifle, and 51 rounds of live ammunition.

The Police spokesperson assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the syndicates and bring them to justice.
