Peter Obi Fires Back At Soludo Over One-Term Presidency Remark
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded firmly to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, following controversial remarks suggesting that any politician promising to serve a single term should be checked into a psychiatric facility.
Obi, who declared on 29 July 2025 that he would contest the 2027 presidential election, pledged to serve just one four-year term if elected.
The former Anambra governor made the vow in a bid to assure Nigerians of his commitment to purposeful leadership, not personal ambition.
However, Soludo, while speaking at a political rally in Anambra South over the weekend, dismissed such a promise as absurd, questioning the mental stability of anyone making it.
Without directly naming Obi, Soludo said, “Anybody, any politician who said that, must be sent to a psychiatric home. You think you are talking to fools?”
In a calm yet pointed response shared on his official Facebook page, Obi stood his ground, describing such criticisms as stemming from people who judge others by their own unreliable standards.
“They forget that Peter Obi is cut from a different cloth,” he wrote.
Obi further argued that if promising to serve a single term is a sign of mental instability, then the framers of Nigeria’s constitution which allows for but does not mandate a second term should also be called into question.
The political exchange has ignited fresh debate on leadership integrity and the culture of broken promises in Nigerian politics.
