FG Dismisses ADC’s Claims On Nigeria’s Foreign Policy, Says Diplomacy Not For Political Point-Scoring
The Federal Government has strongly rebutted recent criticisms by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over Nigeria’s diplomatic posture and the pace of ambassadorial appointments, describing the party’s remarks as “alarmist, politically motivated and misinformed.”
In a statement issued by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Media Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry affirmed that Nigerian foreign missions remain active and effectively manned by seasoned diplomats and chargés d’affaires who continue to protect the nation’s interests, facilitate trade and consular services, and look after Nigerians abroad.
“To suggest otherwise is both inaccurate and an affront to the dedication of our foreign service officers,” the statement read.
Highlighting recent diplomatic engagements by Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar with global partners including the U.S., UK, Germany, Japan, and China, the Ministry reiterated that Nigeria remains a respected voice in international affairs.
Addressing the delay in ambassadorial appointments, the Ministry explained that such decisions are guided by merit, national interest, and strategic alignment—not political expediency.
It also dismissed claims that Nigeria mishandled a U.S. proposal concerning Venezuelan deportees, insisting that Nigeria’s response was principled and in line with its sovereign rights.
“The ADC’s comments reflect political opportunism and a poor grasp of how foreign policy works,” the Ministry said. “Diplomacy is too critical to be dragged into partisan rhetoric.”
The Ministry concluded by urging political actors to exercise restraint and avoid undermining Nigeria’s image abroad with “sensational claims.”
